The 9th Annual Eastchester High School Film Festival will take place Friday May 18 at 7pm and the free event has in years past showcased students who have gone on to work in Film and Video.
In 2004, a relatively unknown teacher from Queens came to Eastchester High School, hoping to make use of the communications systems that were already in place on the cable access channel run by the school and to create a new magnet program that allowed High School students to create and direct their own original short films and videos. Michael Goldstein was instantly hired on as the district's Media Production Specialist and in the process, Eastchester High School began a program that has changed the lives of hundreds of students over the years, giving them another direction to point their careers towards and allowing Goldstein to share his passion for film making with his students. "The cool thing about film making is that it has not …

Those who watch the show "Mythbusters" on the Discovery Channel will be familiar with Adam Savage, who will be speaking to the graduating class at Sarah Lawrence College on Friday.
Adam Savage, co-host of the hit Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters,” will deliver the Commencement address to the Sarah Lawrence class of 2012 on Friday, May 18, at 10 a.m. Recipient of honorary degrees, memberships and awards from academic, research and science education organizations for giving visibility to the scientific method, Savage and his co-hosts have tested hundreds of myths and performed thousands of experiments on the popular television show. “Given the centrality of experimentation and critical thought to SLC’s educational philosophy, I think the pairing of enthusiastic SLC students with Adam Savage’s wisdom and wit will make for a memorable day,” said President of the College Karen R. Lawrence. A New York City native, …

Jeffrey Rohr wins by just under 40 votes, replacing Richard Rugani on the Bronxville School Board while all other races went unopposed in Eastchester and Tuckahoe.
The village of Bronxville will see a new face on their school board come next fall as Jeffrey Rohr got the votes he needed to become the newest member of the board. Here are the break downs from the polls as of 10 p.m. All results are preliminary. In Eastchester, all three school board candidates were running unopposed and here are the tallies for the unopposed incumbents. And in Tuckahoe, incumbent school board member Michael Collins was unopposed for the lone available seat. Collins was appointed in October to serve the unexpired term of Bronxville resident James Oliverio, who resigned in September after serving more than eight years on the board.

Glen Johnson slaps a long single to help Rockland take 7-6 win in exhibition game.
The Rockland Boulders helped the moms in attendance celebrate Mother's Day Sunday with a walk-off win, as Glen Johnson's long single capped a 7-6 exhibition win over the New Jersey Jackals. The Boulders trailed by as much as 6-2 before rallying late, as Todd Gossage's second homer in as many games tied the score in the eighth, and Johnson's shot off the right field wall brought in Norm Hutchins with the winning run, lifting Rockland to its fourth win in five pre-season contests. Training camp ends on May 16, after which the Boulders open the regular season by traveling to Canada to face the defending champ Quebec Captiales on May 17 to start a four game set. They return to Provident Bank Park for the 2012 Home Opener on May 22 against the …

Districts work to meet tax cap, other requirements
Passing school budgets has never been easy. This year’s has been especially challenging, as districts have confronted the state-imposed tax cap, on-going certioraris from local businesses, unfunded mandates, reduced state aid in many cases, and Race to the Top requirements. As a result, the upcoming school budget vote on Tuesday represents a significant shift that will likely affect district funding choices for the foreseeable future. “School districts are under more pressure than ever before to do more with less,” said Dr. Ralph Napolitano, superintendent of the Yorktown school district. Even affluent communities, which would never have questioned class size, curriculum or programming enhancements, had placed those under consideration for…

With the average prom costing upward of $1,000 these days, have things gotten out of control?
With my youngest child’s senior prom now behind her I’m relieved to say I’m done with high school proms. No more nail biting over whether we’ll find the right dress. No more arguing over how much is an appropriate amount to spend on shoes, hair styling and accessories. And no more fretting over whether the gown she picks out will make her look like a princess or a porn star. When my husband found out last year how much her dress for the junior prom was going to cost (nearly $450, with alterations), he was apoplectic. He was speechless when I pointed out that the entire tab, including hair, prom tickets, shoes, earrings and other sundries (including an $80 underwire, strapless bra) would push that price tag to nearly $800. I had to …
Ken Richardson of Eastchester is urging residents to get out and vote on Tuesday May, 15.
The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by Eastchester Resident Ken Richardson. If you would like to submit your own Letter to the Editor, email me at josh.semendoff@patch.com To the Editor: A homework assignment, due Tuesday, for the residents of Eastchester: Get out and VOTE YES for the school budget. Why? Because our kids deserve the best. Because our town deserves a reputation for providing a top-notch education. Because despite little help from the state, difficult decision after difficult decision, members of the Board of Ed (whose job I wouldn’t want) have managed to come up with a budget that falls under the mandatory two percent tax cap. Because we can’t afford to make more cuts than this budget includes: Is this …

A child's report card makes me evaluate my own existence.
My oldest son’s report card came in the mail the other day. He is 13 (going on 10) and in his final months of Middle School. His grades were good for the most part, with his traditional spattering of A’s and B’s, but way down at the bottom of his progress report was a brand new letter of the alphabet to add to his transcript–a “D." When pressed about the mark he did a familiar song and dance, and ended up telling me that he just didn’t take the subject too seriously and even worse, didn’t feel like making much of an effort during the semester. Granted it would have been nice to have received a “heads up” from the teacher before his grades were etched in stone, but my wife and I chose to use this experience as an opportunity to convey the …
