The New Face Of Veganism Is Glamour

It’s finally time to put an end to the negative stereotypes associated with the word “vegan.” Yes, you know it’s true! Vegans have long been depicted as the most unglamorous of people. I have often heard vegans described as “hippies, treehuggers, crunchy granola-heads, or boring yoga-obsessed naturalists who only eat tofu, sprouts, and lentils.”

This common stereotype was exemplified in Sacha Baron Cohen’s movie “The Dictator,” in which Anna Faris played Zooey, the vegan feminist protestor who worked in a Brooklyn Food Coop. Zooey’s character had short hair, hairy armpits, and sported Doc Martens on her feet. Some serious stereotyping going on there, don’t you think so?

The movie “Grown-Ups” also did an excellent job of feeding into vegan stereotypes. In the movie, Rob Schneider is married to an older “hippie-type” woman played by Joyce Van Patten. They are depicted as “oddballs” engrossed in their raw vegan lifestyle, who try to push food made in their dehydrator onto their friends during a reunion.

Although the vegan stereotyping goes on and on and on (see my post Vegan Bashing Everywhere…It’s All Good!), the modern face of veganism couldn’t be further from the images of the unglamorous “hippie-dippie” characters often depicted in media and film.

On the contrary, veganism has gone mainstream and some of our most glamorous and glorified public figures have proudly chosen to go vegan.

After all, do these vegan women look like unglamorous “hippies” to you?
