On March 12, Alfasi led the team to a championship victory against St. Eugene School in Yonkers. This was the second championship for the team in the five-game tournament series. And Alfasi, who has been playing for two years, won the coveted MVP honor.

At the tender age of ten, Alfasi has a passion for the game.

“I love basketball!,” she says. “My coach Sal Recupero and coach Larry taught me how to play. My mom said that I would be a good rebounder and on defense. I tried out two years ago and I liked it and thought it was fun.”

Scoring 16 points in the championship game, Alfasi understands the importance of playing as a team and calls the 12 girls on the team great friends.

“Playing basketball has taught me a lot about teamwork, because you can’t just be a ball hog,” she says. “I also have a lot more courage and I know I can do anything.”

Scoring the MVP spot was very special to Alfasi, but she didn’t relish in the glory alone.

“My team is awesome. They always encourage me by saying ‘Alaina good try’ or give me high-fives,” she says. “It’s all because of them. I couldn’t have won without them.”

When she’s not on the court, Alfasi enjoys writing and art.

“I like writing because I like to express my feelings. I like art because I like to draw and doodle a lot,” she says.
