Up for a Challenge? Run to Benefit Local Organizations this Sunday

The last day to pre-register by mail for the Challenge Road Race is Friday, September 10, although you can sign up day-of as well.

For the past 34 years, Tuckahoe has held it's annual Challenge Road Race—and this year is no exception. The race, which consists of a one-mile race, a five-mile race, falls on Sunday, September 12.

"The event was established by a former runner," said coordinator and village trustee Clare Gorman, "The town looks forward to the event every year."

Gorman described it as a great family event and fundraiser for the community.

Many Tuckahoe residents and members of the community-at-large participate. "Each year we have between 200-500 entrants, it all depends on the weather of the race day," said Gorman.

At the event, the challenge itself is to complete both the one-mile and five-mile race, which start the Community Center on Columbus Avenue.

The one-mile race, which begins at 9 a.m., takes runners down to Crestwood and then back to the Center. The five-mile, on the other hand, starts at 9:30 a.m. and has runners hit Main Street, Garrett Avenue, Armour Villa Avenue, Oakland, Marbledale and more, before eventually heading back to the Community Center. In addition to the two races, there is also a special adult-child one-mile race held in honor of Howard Richter.

According to the event flyer, "The one-mile race is flat, while the five-mile race is mostly flat with a few rolling hills between 2.5 and 4-miles." It also says that there will be water stops at the second and fourth-mile marks.

At the end of the races, according to the flyer, there will be an awards ceremony, giving recognition to participants that complete "The Challenge," the one-mile and five-mile race and the adult-child race in various categories.

Benefactors of the annual race include the Tuckahoe Senior Citizens, Tuckahoe Beautification Committee, the Eastchester Community Action Program and the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Thinking of participating? The last day to pre-register by mail is Friday, September 10th. But you can also register the day of the race, at 7:30 a.m., where registration and check-in will be held at the Community Center.

And if you're one of the first 200 entrants, you get a free t-shirt, which this year was designed by Tuckahoe resident Laura Fitzpatrick.

Twenty-four local businesses will sponsor this year's event, including the headlining sponsor Hudson Valley Bank.

"We are so grateful to our sponsors, without their generosity the race wouldn't be a success," said Gorman.
