Two Bronxville Lacrosse Players Bound for Division I Teams

Juniors Jack Near and Charlie McCormick have both made verbal commitments—Near to Notre Dame and McCormick to Georgetown.

The list of Division I boys lacrosse players that have come out of Bronxville is a very short one.

So that makes the situation on this year's Broncos team all the more unique.

Bronxville has not one, but two, Division I-bound players – and they're both juniors who made verbal commitments just prior to the start of this season.

Midfielder Jack Near decided on the University of Notre Dame after also drawing heavy interest from two-time defending national champion Syracuse as well as Georgetown, Hofstra, Colgate and Brown.

Another versatile and athletic midfielder, Charlie McCormick decided on Georgetown after also considering Syracuse, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Penn State and Hofstra.

Near said his decision went beyond lacrosse.

"In large part what the school had to offer me academically and, of course, athletically," he said. "The turning point was their commitment to be No. 1 in everything that the institution is associated with."

Near and McCormick each gained notice from college recruiters this past summer while playing for the Cross River-based Prime Time Lacrosse travel team. Near was also one of the leading players at one of the premier recruiting events of the summer, the Maverick Showtime Lacrosse National Recruiting Showcase held at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

"Jack is an extremely athletic, two-way midfielder who is scrappy and can dominate dodging down the alleys," said Nick Daniello, who coached Near on the Prime Time team. "He has the ability to take over games and can shoot on the run with the best of them. He will be an impact player at the next level and has a bright future at Notre Dame."

But Near knows he will have to continue to work on his skills in order to be ready to make the adjustment to the next level.

"I want to improve my shooting accuracy and velocity on the run," he said. "There is always room for improvement of stick skills and finishing in close."

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound McCormick's commitment came just before Near made his choice.

"When I went to visit, after meeting the people in the lacrosse program, I saw myself fitting in at Georgetown," McCormick said. "After getting off the train, I knew that Washington D.C. was a place that I wanted to be in and  a place I can see myself after college. The coaches were very encouraging and gave me all the time I wanted to make a decision."

Daniello said McCormick's versatility will be a big plus when he arrives at Georgetown.

"He is an athletic player with a great stick and a great shot,"  Daniello said. "He can really rip it, and is a good shooter on the run. He takes faceoffs, too."

McCormick is also equally adept with either hand and is known for his quickness coming off dodges.

"My style of play can be characterized by quick north to south dodging from the midfield position, and being able to score," he said. "I don't mind if there is a settled or unsettled situation and I like to keep the ball moving. I make smart decisions when feeding and shooting, and like to hit a guy with a pass backdoor."
