Sports Recap: Cain and Rizzo Excel at Section 1 Coaches Meet

Bronxville girls cross country team places second overall at Saturday's meet. Plus, a roundup of last week's sports games.

The Bronxville girls' cross country team placed second overall–just three points behind Honeoye Falls–with Mary Cain and Meredith Rizzo finishing second and third overall to lift the Broncos runners at the prestigious Section 1 Coaches Invitational on Saturday, October 23.

Cain, a freshman, ran a time of 19:04.27, just 22 seconds off the pace of overall winner Ursula Svoboda of Suffern (18:42.17. Rizzo, a sophomore, ran a time of 19:21.36 to take third place in the Varsity II classification.

The young and improving Broncos girls also got top finishes from freshman Courtney Campbell, who ran in 14th place, and sophomore Amelia Phillips, who placed 22.

Palumbo takes second

Eastchester High School standout runner Victor Palumbo placed second overall in the Varsity II competition with a time of 16:37.57. Palumbo won the Section 1 Conference meet individual title two weeks ago.

Boys' soccer

Tuckahoe: Rob Marcovic and Billy Burke each scored a goal in an 8-2 loss to Edgemont on October 18—Mark Sarno had 14 saves in goal for the Eagles. Marcovic and Steve each scored a goal and goalie Matt Stupple had 18 saves in goal in a 5-2 loss to Eastchester on October 19.

Bronxville: The Broncos fell 1-0 to Sherman-Ripley on October 19. Jack Connors saved 9 shots in goal. On October 21, Ilya Dubinski scored three times and Joey Colvin added a goal–Jack Connors saved seven shots on goal–and the Broncos topped Edgemont 4-1. The Broncos finished the week at 11-3-1.

Eastchester: The Eagles topped neighboring school Tuckahoe 5-2 on the strength of goals by Yuki Inadome (2), Mike McGovern, James Manning, Mike Cavanaugh – each with one goal on October 19. Andrew Schwartz had four saves in goal for the Eagles. Robert Leal scored the lone goal and Andrew Schwartz had a shutout in goal, stopping 16 shots for the Eagles in a 1-0 victory over Pelham on October 21. Eastchester is now 10-5-1 on the season.

 

Girls' soccer

Bronxville: The Broncos girls topped Eastchester 1-0 on October 18 as Jessica Tarangioli scored the game's only goal in the second overtime and goalie Grace Devlin stopped four shots on goal. The Broncos were 9-1-0 after the win. An overtime goal by Michaela Donohue and a shutout performance with seven saves in goal by Grace Devlin lifted the Broncos to a 1-0 victory over Ardsley on October 19. Michaela Donohue scored but the Broncos fell 2-1 to Eastchester on October 21. The Broncos recovered quickly and scored 1-0 victory over Sherman-Ripley the next day as Charlotte Warble stopped all six shots on goal and Michaela Donohue scored the game's lone goal.

Eastchester: The Eagles played tough defensively, with goalie Livia Meneghin stopping 14 shots in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Bronxville. Eastchester had a record of 10-4-1 after the loss. Diana Ottomanelli and Olivia Fox each scored a goal in a 4-2 loss to Sherman-Ripley on October 19. Shaun O'Hanlon scored the game's only goal and Livia Meneghin had another standout performance in goal, stopping four shots in a 1-0 shutout win over Sherman-Ripley on October 20. Eastchester's record stands at 10-4-1. Alessia Barca and Shaun O'Hanlon scored for the Eagles in a big 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Bronxville. Sara Doyle stopped 12 shots in goal for the Eagles on October 21.

Tuckahoe: Diana Ottomanelli scored for the Tigers and goaltender Tess Meyer turned away 19 shots in a 4-1 loss to Pelham on October 18. 

 

Field hockey

Bronxville: Brooke Bonfiglio scored twice and teammates Lara Florek, Nicole Carpenter and Bailey Wood each added a goal for the Broncos in a 5-1 win over Irvington. Goalies Rebecca Moore and Katie Knox stopped a combined eight shots as the Broncos ran their record to 8-3-2 on October 18. Nicole Carpenter had a hat trick (three goals) and Bailey Wood and Melissa Imperiale scored a goal apiece in a 5-1 win over Hastings on October 20. Katie Knox stopped three shots.    

 

Volleyball

Eastchester: Christie Lampedusa had 6 kills, 11 assists and 8 digs,  Brianna Balsamo had seven kills, Samantha Weinblatt had 15 digs, Amy DePippo had five kills and 12 assists and Catherine Manning had five kills in a 3-1 set victory over Woodlands, lifting their record to 12-3 on October 19. The Eagles got three kills, 14 assists and 11 digs from Amy DePippo and Katie Michels had 8 kills and four digs in a 3-0 victory over Irvington. Samantha added 25 digs in the October 22 match.

Tuckahoe: The Tigers suffered a 3-0 loss to Edgemont–Kaitlin Boyer had an assist and a kill for the Tigers on October 21.
