Mary Cain of Bronxville Wins World Junior Running Title

Cain's winning time was 8:58.48, which was two seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

In impressive fashion Thursday, Bronxville native Mary Cain won the 3,000 meter World Junior Championship in Eugene, Oregon, according to Runner's World

Cain's winning time was 8:58.48, which was two seconds faster than the second-place finisher, a feat appreciated by a roaring crowd, writes reporter Cathal Dennehy.

Before Cain's victory, no American had won a medal in distances above 800 meters in the 28-year history of the World Junior Championships. Prior to the race, Cain was considered a favorite to win, according to Let's Run.

"I told her to relax, run as little distance as possible, wait until the last 200, and that nobody could outkick her," said her coach, famed runner Alberto Salazar, told Runner's World.

Cain, who has been featured in Sports Illustrated and other publications, grew up in Bronxville, where she also attended the high school.
