Local Basketball Teams Head for Playoffs

Top-seeded Tuckahoe, No. 6 Eastchester lead boys, while Bronxville girls are seeded No. 3.

“Frantic February"–the hectic last two weeks of the month in local sports—brings the best in Section 1 high school sports together for the postseason with out-bracket play-in games to determine final seeding match-ups for basketball area teams beginning on Feb. 18. The winners of those early playoff games look forward to a visit to the Westchester County Center and the Section 1 Final Four.

The Tuckahoe Tigers rebounded from a horrible 3-15 season last year and earned a No. 1 seed in the class C playoffs with a strong 15-3 regular season record and will face a No. 8 seed Hawthorne/CK team at Tuckahoe on Wednesday, Feb. 23 in their opening round game–a quarterfinal.

The Tigers are led by high-scoring Sky Williams, team leader Jason Feuer and a strong balanced group that can score points. Defense will be key for the Tigers’ success. Look for the Tigers in the County Center.

Eastchester’s boys, who ran to a 14-4 record in Class A and are seeded No. 6, will meet the winner of the Nanuet-Harrison play-in game in a first-round game on Friday, Feb. 18.

Dave Solano is the Eagles’ scoring leader and Joe Ryan helps lead the team from the backcourt. A season-ending injury to point guard Jack Daly has slowed the Eagles slightly, but this team plays good fundamental basketball and can reach the Final Four. Kennedy is the Class A top seed.

On the girls’ side of the court, Bronxville’s Broncos had a very successful season and earned a No. 3 seed in the Class B bracket. The Broncos will host No. 14 Hastings on Feb. 18 in an opening round game. Grace Devlin leads a good group of athletes who have played the best defense in the area. This team may shock and make the Final Four. Irvington is the top seed and defending champion–the Bulldogs are poised to repeat.
