In Pictures: 35th Tuckahoe Challenge Road Race

Runners take on village hills after moment of silence.

The 35th Tuckahoe Challenge Road Race was held under blue skies dotted with puffy white clouds on Sunday morning on Columbus Avenue.

Actually two races -- a one-miler followed by five -- the event included a moment of silence for the victims of September 11th, led by Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond.

The winners of the one-mile race were Julie Threlkeld of Yonkers in the women's division, and Kevin Shelton-Smith of Riverdale in the men's.

Shelton-Smith repeated, with first place in the five miler, along with Emmy Stocker of Cos Cob for the women.

Stocker said running in Tuckahoe was a last minute decision for her, as she prepares for a 50 mile race in Vermont.  The mother of three is a coach of the Greenwich Track Club, and a member of the Taconic Region Running Club.

Shelton-Smith, who works at the United Nations, and is a member of the Van Cortlandt Track Club in the Bronx, enjoyed the dual races, saying that a lot of runners from the region participate because it's great preparation for the upcoming Fifth Avenue Mile in Manhattan.

Threlkeld, a member of the New York Harriers, was also "tuning up" for the Fifth Avenue Mile.  For a detailed account of her run, check out her blog, Races Like a Girl.
