Find the Right Fit for Summer Fitness

From soccer for tots to tai chi for seniors, here's a round up of local fitness activities.

Ahh long days and warm weather…summer is finally here and it's the perfect time to get up off the couch and get moving. Residents in Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Eastchester have a wide range of activities available, so take a moment to find the perfect fit for you. Here's a round up of some tradition and some not-so-traditional ways to get your groove on.

Boot Camp @ Fitness Together

I walk by Fitness Together regularly but this week I finally stopped in to check it out. Inside you'll find a personal-training facility with individual workout rooms that allow customers to work one-on-one with a trainer in what feels like the privacy of your own home.

This summer FT is offering indoor and outdoor boot camp sessions. Expect to do a lot of jumping jacks, lunges, push-ups, stair climbing, plyometrics and weight training. It sounds like a guaranteed good workout and if you need a little extra inspiration, just hang around Fitness Together's owner, Lonnie Walton (who is in awesome shape), it should be enough to make you want to get your butt in gear.

Moms and Dads, while you're kids learn to dribble, be sure to check out the BFC's expanding space (opening this August). In additional to the tried-and-true treadmills and elliptical machines, the new room will house a rower, Arc Trainer, cable pulls and a Power Plate.

Maybe you're more into Wimbledon than the World Cup, there are plenty of options to work on your serve in the area.

The courts on Garden Avenue in downtown Bronxville offer a variety of private, semi-private, adult and kids clinics. In order to play there you must join for the summer and get a permit. From there you can reserve court space and sign up for classes.

The Center is open to all senior citizens in Westchester and offers daily exercise classes for a suggested donation ($3 residents/ $4 non-residents). Class times range from 8:30a to 12:15p and include options from beginners to advanced. Beginning in August, try out Tai Chi.

Yoga

Beginning in July, practice your tree pose in the park with a Karma yoga class (donation-based yoga). Certified yoga instructor, Katie Walsh (that's me!) is teaching an hour-long, open level Vinyasa flow class. Bring your own mat and get ready to enjoy nature as we soak in the sun and summer air while stretching out and finding our zen.

Classes will be held in The Bronx River Parkway Reservation (the park adjacent to the Bronx River Parkway). All donations will go to the Yonkers Animal Shelter and the Friends of Westchester County Parks.
