DeLuca's Big Day Leads Eagles to 42-0 Win

Highlights from the Eastchester varsity football game on Saturday.

Giuseppe DeLuca showed triple-threat offensive power Saturday, scoring on a kickoff return, a punt return and a pass reception to lead Eastchester to a 42-0 victory over visiting Saunders on opening day of the 2010 football season.

DeLuca dashed 92 yards with the game's opening kickoff for a quick Eagles (1-0) lead, then took a 27-yard pass from quarterback Tom DiCarlo followed by a 60-yard punt return for another score in the second quarter as the Eagles rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead.

"Well it was crazy, since I ran back the kick return this would be the third year the opening game we ran back the kick," DeLuca said. "I was telling myself I had to do it and every one around me was telling me as well. Then, as the game went on I also was telling myself I wanted to score three touchdowns. I was trying my best to make a play out of anything."

DiCarlo went 3 for 3 for 52 yards passing and added 40 rushing yards as the Eagles rushed for 182 total yards.

"Passing is very important for the offense," DiCarlo said. "Even though we don't do it often, we have to take advantages of the throws we make to keep defenses honest and prevent them from loading the box with eight or nine guys. We were able to capitalize and it worked well for us in the long run."

Tom's brother Greg DiCarlo made an impressive debut at running back, rushing for 58 yards on six carries, including touchdown runs of six and 16 yards.

"Greg is always running fast," the Eagles quarterback said, boasting about his younger brother's success. "His style differs from mine because we are like thunder and lighting. I like going through people and he likes going around him. In my limited playing time I scored one touchdown but after I pitched to him and he ran in his own on the option. I have been hearing nonstop about how my little brother scored more touchdowns than I did. So I have to counter with the fact that I have a throwing touchdown."

The Eagles visit Nyack (1-0) next week.
