College Sports Notebook:

Iona Is Going Dancing

In just his second year at the helm Head Coach Tim Cluess has the Gaels in the NCAA tournament stealing one of the final at-large bids to get into the big dance.

Iona will be part of the “First Four” and they will play Brigham Young in Dayton Ohio on Tuesday. BYU comes into the matchup at 25-8 with a 12-4 record inside of the WCC.

The Cougars are an experienced team and they enter the game with four players averaging in double figures.

This is the first time Iona has made it to the NCAA Tournament since Jeff Ruland took the Gaels in 2006, that year Iona lost to LSU in the first round and since 1980 Iona has only won one of their eight tournament games.

Kilpatrick, Bearcats come up short

The NCAA Tournament is up next, but the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team will be entering play following a disappointing 50-44 loss to Louisville in the Big East title game at Madison Square Garden.

The matchup was between old adversaries, with Louisville having played Cincinnati more than any other opponent and leading the all-time series 54-41.

Sean Kilpatrick of White Plains, who powered the Bearcats to an upset of No. 2-seeded Syracuse in the semifinals, missed his first six shots in the final and finished with just five points (2-of-9 from the floor) and three rebounds.

Kilpatrick, an alum of Notre Dame Prep, was outstanding in getting the Bearcats into the championship contest. In the victory over Syracuse, the sophomore swingman scored 18 points on 6-of-9 marksmanship from long range.

But against Louisville, Kilpatrick and the Bearcats (24-10) dug themselves a 16-point hole in the second half, clanging one jumper after another off the rim.

Cincinnati went 20 of 51 (39 percent) from the floor and was even worse at the foul line, making just 1 of 7.

“They did a pretty good job on the outside. They played a great game, and we came out sluggish the first half,” Kilpatrick, a second-team all-Big East selection, said on the school’s website. “We were just too comfortable with everything that was going on."

Kilpatrick was not alone in having a rare off-night, as 6-foot-9 senior Yancy Gates, a home-grown player out of Withrow High, had just nine points and six rebounds. Gates came in averaging a team-high 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in two tournament games.

Kilpatrick and the Bearcats will enter the NCAA Tournament as the East Region’s sixth seed, and they will take on Texas in Nashville on Friday.

Salandra, Milligan star in defeat

Don Bosco Prep alum Georgio Milligan of Spring Valley led all scorers with 23 points, and Hackley School grad Jon Salandra of Harrison had a game-high 11 rebounds, but Franklin & Marshall fell to No. 3 MIT, 69-54, in the NCAA Elite Eight in Lancaster, PA.

The Diplomats wrapped up its season with a 28-3 mark while MIT improved to 29-1 and advanced to their first Final Four.

The Engineers ended the first half with a 6-0 run and went into the break with a 30-23 advantage.

Milligan shot 6-of-6 from the line and 3-of-5 from behind the arc. The senior scored 20 or more points in three of the Diplomats’ four NCAA Tournament games, and led the team in scoring in his final season with an 18.9 norm.

Salandra, a sophomore, averaged 9.5 points and six rebounds per game this season.

Mortarboard musings

  • The Wentworth College men’s hockey team, including sophomore defenseman Andrew Moscardelli of Pearl River, was blanked by St. Norbert, 3-0, in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals at Kreitzberg Arena in Northfield, VT. Wentworth finishes its season at 21-7-1 while St. Norbert (18-5-5) will meet Norwich (24-2-2) in the semifinals at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
  • The Purchase College baseball team doesn’t have to travel very far on Thursday when it visits rival Manhattanville at 3:30 p.m.
  • Senior starter Mike Giordano of Bedford pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs as the Manhattan College baseball team lost to High Point University, 5-0, at Williard Stadium in North Carolina. Giordano, a Fox Lane grad, turned the ball over to reliever Taylor Sewitt of Highland Mills, who allowed one hit in the final two innings. John Maloney of Mahopac, a sophomore, is on the pitching staff at High Point.
  • The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its fourth straight game and sixth in its last seven, downing Bloomfield College, 8-6, in Lake Worth, FL. The southern swing continues today against American International College and winds up on Wednesday against St. Michael’s, after which the team will return north to host Southern New Hampshire University in a pair of twin-bills at Provident Bank Park in Pomona on Saturday and Sunday. Both double-headers are scheduled to start at noon.

Weekly Sports Poll:

In poll the New York Jets and General Manager Mike Tannenbaum decided not to listen to our results as the team made Mark Sanchez the seventh highest paid quarterback in the NFL and told Peyton Manning to look for work elsewhere.

Over 51 percent felt the Jets would be best served to spend the money and bring in Manning for a few years to mentor the Sanchize, but Tannenbaum and crew feel that the fourth year quarterback is both the present and future.

It’s March, so this week’s poll question deals with the topic that will be on everyone’s mind for the next month: The NCAA Tournament.

Kentucky and Syracuse come into the field of 68 as the top two seeds but as we all know, anything can happen in March.

Let us know what number one seed you think has the best chance to win it all this season in our .
