Daily Sports Digest: Rye Swimmer Finishes Sixth At Olympic Trials

Ryan Feeley of Rye, a standout swimmer at the University of Michigan, placed sixth in the grueling 1,500 freestyle in the last event of the eight-day U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Feeley, an alum of Rye High, was clocked in 15:10.52 as Andrew Gemmell and Connor Jaeger finished one-two with respective times of 14:52.10 and 14:52. 51. Feeley also reached the finals in the 400 free and placed fifth. Feeley was one of 10 area swimmers to compete at the trials and was the only one to reach the finals.

All-time leading Tuckahoe High School scorer Sky Williams reportedly will play basketball at Manhattan College as a preferred walk-on.

Williams led Section 1 in scoring, averaging 27.8 points to go along with 6.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.8 steals per game. Tuckahoe finished 25-0 last season and won just the second state championship in program history.

The 10th Junior Golf Camp at Phillip J. Rotella Golf Course in Thiells is under way, and runs through Aug. 8. The Camp is conducted Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with a 4-to-1 student-teacher ratio, notes camp director Michael Laudien, a PGA member and top-25 player in the Met Section of the PGA. Hats off to Baird, Casarella, Neuendorf

Recently retired Journal News columnist Bob Baird had a yearly scholarship named in his honor for his longtime, unwavering commitment to the Rockland County sports community, while Joe Casarella, legendary football coach at North Rockland HS, received the Joe Grasso Memorial Appreciation Award at the annual Rockland County Coaches Association (RCCA) barbeque. On the same day, Joni Neuendorf, outgoing president of the RCCA, received the Steve Drummond Memorial Service Award.
