Daily Sports Digest: Local Teams Stay Alive

No high school was more active in the state championships this passed weekend then Bronxville. The Broncos stayed alive in field hockey and girl’s soccer and came home with the state championship in girl’s cross country.

Bronxville’s soccer team is the reigning Class B state champion and after beating Oneonta they will play Schalmont from Section 2 in the final four. The game will be played at SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 5 p.m. and if Bronxville wins they will play again on Sunday at Tompkins Cortland Community College for the state crown.

The Bronco field hockey team was also victorious and they will be in the states final four for the first time since 2008. They will head to Cicero-North High School in Syracuse 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Led by sophomore Mary Cain the Broncos narrowly beat out Greenwich for the state championship in Vernon Verona Sherrill High School in Verona New York.

Yesterday’s Results:

Sport: Girl’s Soccer

Game: Bronxville vs. Oneonta

Score: Bronxville Won 1-0

Highlights: The game’s only goal came with 40 seconds left in the first half when Jess Tarangioli found Shannon Crawford for a header. Goal keeper Grace Devlin took over from there as she pitched her 17th shut out of the season. Amy Pepe, Catherine Bianco and Meredith Donovan also anchored the Bronco defense.

 

Sport: Field Hockey

Game: Bronxville vs. Webutuck

Score: Bronxville Won 6-0

Highlights: Gretchen Richter led the way for Bronxville as she picked up three goals and an assist in the win. Jenna Jiampietro and Ally Pass also scored while Bailey Wood had a goal and two assists.

 

Sport: Cross Country

Game: State Championships

Girl’s Score: Bronxville 43 (1st Place) Full Results

Girl’s Highlights: Mary Cain led the way as the Broncos snuck by the opposition for a title. Cain’s first place finish set the tone as she came in with a time of 19:29.5. Meredith Rizzo finished in fifth place overall with a time of 20:33.4.

Boy’s Highlights: Sophomore John Flannery was the lone male representative for the Broncos as he came in 15th place overall with a time of 18.07.0.
