College Sports Notebook:

Chargers Continue Charge in Tournament

The Dominican College baseball team, which defeated Caldwell College, 6-5, in the single elimination portion of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Championship, takes on second-seeded host Wilmington University today at 3 p.m. at Wilson Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Chargers (26-24) are third-seeded in the tournament, which continues through Saturday

First baseman Andrew Camardella of Pelham had a two-run triple to open a 5-0 lead in the third inning in the win over Caldwell, which rallied to tie in the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, senior Tyler Sadawske of Waukesha, WI, walked, and Tony Blake of Windsor, CT, was hit by a pitch. The winning run scored when a shot by Camardella was misplayed, giving reliever Matt Festa of Staten Island his third win of the season.

Mortarboard musings

  • After leading the Manhattan College softball team to three straight wins to conclude the season, Kate Bowen of Newtown, CT, was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week. Bowen hit .333 while also going 2-1 in the circle against Wagner, Fairfield and Saint Peter’s.
  • Matt Bonomolo of Pearl River, a standout center on the Mount Ida College football team, received the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) merit award for “excellence on the fields of competition and in the classroom, and outstanding service to this institution.” A 2009 graduate of Nanuet High School, Bonomolo—who last summer interned at ESPN--has been offered an internship with the NBA league office this summer. Bonomolo, who is a two-time ECAC academic all-conference selection, was inducted into the Sigma Delta Beta honor society in April, and has been named a team captain for the next football season.
  • Westchester Community College outfielder Pat Farina of Mahopac has been named MVP on the all-Mid-Hudson Conference baseball team. Other first-team selections are teammates Alan Carey of Staten Island and Greg Carroll of Croton, both pitchers, and Rockland Community College infielder John Ziznewski of Staten Island.
  • Manhattanville junior tennis player Joeliza Valdez was named to the All-Freedom Conference Second Team for the first time in her career.

Weekly Sports Poll:

On Tuesday the Yankees had no bullpen issues as New York beat the Rays 5-3, yesterday was a different story. After Cory Wade and Rafael Soriano held the Rays scoreless in the seventh and eighth the Yankees turned the ball over to their newest closer David Robertson and the former All-Star gave up four runs in the ninth inning to lose 4-1
