Daily Sports Digest: Eastchester Basketball Sweeps Holliday Tournaments

Bronxville sophomore Mary Cain proved that she is among the Nation’s elite athletes as she competed in the Nike Nationals in Oregon. In cold and mud Cain and 195 other girls participated at Portland Meadows in Portland. Cain finished in sixth place with a time of 17:56, the meet’s winner, Sarah Baxter from Simi Valley XC Club came in with a time of 17:38.

Two big wrestling tournaments took place over the weekend in Westchester as Rye hosted an eight team meet and Port Chester hosted 12 teams at SUNY Purchase for the 36th annual Tony Carlucci Tournament. Fox Lane beat Somers for first place in the Port Chester meet and Brewster took the title at Rye. Check out our Photo Gallery from Saturday’s action at SUNY Purchase on Facebook.

Cancer affects everyone on a daily basis and Jimmy V’s ESPY speech still rings in my ears. Years ago ESPN set up the Jimmy V foundation to help fight this disease, and every year at this time the family of networks asks for donations and sets up a week full of survival stories in the sports world.

Score: Haldane Won 57-50

Highlights: Jack Aherne led the Broncos with 14 points.

 

Sport: Boy’s Basketball (Keio Tournament Saturday)

Game: Bronxville vs. Palisade Prep

Score: Bronxville Won 58-31

Highlights: Jack Aherne picked up 16 points and Charlie Terry had 15 in the Bronco win in the third place game.

 

Sport: Boy’s Basketball (Eastchester Tournament Friday)

Game: Eastchester vs. Hunter

Score: Eastchester Won 51-48

Highlights: David Solano led the way 21 points.

 

Sport: Boy’s Basketball (Eastchester Tournament Saturday)

Game: Eastchester vs. Panas

Score: Eastchester Won 69-66

Highlights: Eastchester won the tournament championship behind Jack Daly’s 31 points. Daly was named tournament MVP.

 

Sport: Girl’s Basketball (Eastchester Tournament Saturday)

Game: Eastchester vs. Briarcliff

Score: Eastchester Won 46-41

Highlights: Gabriel Pinto picked up 15 points and 17 boards en route to being named the Sports Clun Holiday Tournament MVP.

 

Sport: Ice Hockey

Game: Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville vs. North Rockland

Score: ETB Won 4-0

Highlights: ETB picked up two goals from defenseman Frank Sherding. Ian Pelfrey and Matt Power also scored.

 

Sport: Wrestling 

Game: 12 Team Port Chester Tournament

Score: Eastchester 10th Place

Highlights: Eastchester was 1-4 in pool play, only beating Westlake 39-27. The team came in 10th as they fell to Croton-Harmon 52-39. In the final match Philip Capriglione, Dave Fair, and Kosta Alekhanov pinned their opponents.

 

Today’s Schedule:

In Ice Hockey, Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville will face off against Rye Town Harrison at Playland at 6:45 p.m. 

In Wrestling, East Ramapo heads to Eastchester at 4:15 p.m.
