Spartans flying high

On a roll following their sixth straight victory—a non-conference 8-5 win over Bridgeport--the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans host Molloy College today at 3:30 p.m. at Provident Bank Park in Pomona.

The Spartans, who have won 15 of their last 19 to improve to 17-8 overall, travel to Dobbs Ferry on Wednesday for an East Coast Conference tilt, and will be back at PBP on Thursday at 4 p.m. for a showdown against LeMoyne College, another East Region power.

Junior Frank Salerno of New City continues to lead STAC in hitting with an impressive .389 average, while George Wargo of West Haverstraw is batting at a .318 clip.

On the hill, Matt Marotta of Suffern tops the list with a 1.45 ERA, while Mike Roestenberg of Long Island is pitching to a 1.50 ERA, Ken Frawley of White Plains is at .189 and Joe DePool of New City sports a 2.25.

Steinberg, Scarlet Knights upended

Senior midfielder Ali Steinberg of Suffern was held in check as the Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team came up just short in an upset bid against undefeated Notre Dame at the RU Turf Field in Piscataway, NJ.

Steinberg, who is leading the Scarlet Knights with 27 points on 20 goals and seven assists, was held to just four shots and one goal as Rutgers was overtaken, 13-12, in overtime by the Irish (8-0).

Steinberg also leads the club in shots with 49, but Danielle Mascera of Verona, NJ, helped to pick up the slack with a personal-best five assists.

Mascera added a goal to pace the Scarlet Knights (5-4) with six points, while junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson of Wading River posted three goals for RU.

Steinberg & Co. visit Villanova on Thursday for a game at 6 p.m., and then travel to Syracuse on Saturday for a 1 p.m. confrontation.

Weekly Sports Poll:

The men’s basketball field of 68 is down to the final two and tonight Kentucky and Kansas will battle for the 2012 championship in New Orleans. Last week’s poll asked who you thought would win this year’s title and overwhelmingly the Patch public with over 50 percent of the vote.

April is finally here and Major League Baseball season begins later this week so naturally this week’s poll deals with America’s favorite pastime. Baseball changed their rules and this year the playoffs could include three teams from one division but this week we are asking you ?
