Cain Honored by New York State Public Schools

The Bronxville runner was recently named Class C Athlete of the Year.

Mary Cain didn’t miss a beat or a step moving from her successful fall cross country season to the indoor track for the winter season.

The Bronxville freshman, a state champion in Class C cross country and the leader of Bronxville’s Class C state championship team in the fall, has been named Class C Athlete of the Year for the girls’ indoor track by the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association.

“It was a very great honor,” said Cain, who set a state record for freshman runners finishing second in the state championships in the 1,000-meter run. “Since there are many great runners out there, it was an honor to be singled out. Overall, this season was very exciting and fun.”

Cain’s state record time of 2 minutes 50.84 seconds came in the state qualifier en route to her second place finish in the final. She also earned All-America honors by placing sixth in the New Balance Indoor Nationals in late March.

“Mary had a wonderful season indoors,” Broncos coach Jim Mitchell said.

The diminutive ninth-grader also anchored Bronxville’s  4 x 800m relay to a win in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, broke the national ninth grade 1000 meter record and ran 4:46.42 for the 1600 meter in anchoring the Broncos’ distance medley to a third at Nationals (fastest in country). She also ran 2:09.62 in the 800 meters to get sixth at nationals—a school record by 4 seconds.

“We are hoping to continue to improve, but we really just plan to take one race at a time,” Cain said of her meteoric rise in her first year of competition. “It is important to stay focused and healthy, and if we do that we should have another really great season.”
