Bronxville Boys Lacrosse Shines Against Irvington

Bronxville JV Boys Lacrosse beats Irvington 11 - 7 on Monday

On a wet field after a days worth of rain and dreary weather, the Bronxville junior varsity boys lacrosse team showed Monday why winning isn't enough—it's how you win that also matters.

Up 7-2 midway through the second quarter the Bronxville Broncos executed on offense like a finely tuned machine. The passing game was impressive as they moved as one unit with one goal in mind...domination. They started the game scoring on their opening possession and never relinquished the lead from that point.

Their vocal and fiery coach didn't hold back on the emotion, at one point shouting, "FOUL…Are you kidding me ref, you didn't see that?!" to one of the two referees. The ref could only manage a shoulder shrug as the play continued.

After an extremely quiet first quarter for Irvington, they managed to wake up from their slumber midway through the second quarter to pull off two offensive series back to back, putting them up from 2 to 4 points.  Although, as the first half ended, they still trailed the Broncos by 3, with the score at 7-4.

The defensive game plan was also a factor for the Broncos, particularly in the first half, who seemed to have an eye for the goal and were relentless in blocking and causing turnovers. They held Irvington to 7 total points by the end of the game.

The game wasn't left without some interesting highlights and dramatic moments.

During the first quarter #23 for Bronxville went down hard, after getting tripped up with his own teammate, causing a nasty ankle injury that took him out for the rest of the game. He left the field on crutches.  But the most interesting moment came late in the fourth quarter when #20 for Bronxville, after causing a turnover that gave Irvington the ball, lost his cool and fouled an Irvington player resulting in him being taken off the field.  As he exited the field, he continued on and appeared to leave the game entirely, throwing his helmet to the ground and hitting the fence with his lacrosse stick, clearly upset.

For the rest of the Broncos however, it was all smiles and high-fives as the team finished the day with an impressive win over a solid Irvington team that rallied in spurts throughout the game, but couldn't match the teamwork and offensive game plan of Bronxville.

The Broncos finished the fourth quarter with 3 more points, extending their lead to 11. They held the ball to drain the clock towards the final minutes, which sealed Irvington's fate. As Irvington attempted one final offensive series in the final 40 seconds, the defense held and didn't give up any points.

As often in sports, good teams win games, but the better teams finish strong, with or without the lead. Irvington never gave up their opportunity for a comeback and Bronxville didn't sit on their 4-point advantage.

Final score: Bronxville 11 – Irvington 7.
