Tuckahoe Students Learn with Help from Corporations

Several students are participating in program that gives them hands on education with various corporate partners.

From the Tuckahoe Union Free School District:

Tuckahoe students of all ages are taking their education beyond the classroom through arrangements with various local companies.

Eleventh grade student, Julia Moschetta, completed a five-week program this summer entitled "Leading for Impact" at the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute in Irvington, NY. As part of the program she and a partner selected a cause to advance and benefit. Through their project work, focused on Stopping Domestic Violence, they raised awareness and funds by baking and holding bake sales at programs at EFLI. The two were able to donate $428 to Hopes Door, a local shelter for victims of domestic violence, which they visited during the program. During a culmination ceremony, the participants presented their projects before an audience, including the company CEO Eileen Fisher. Julia was encouraged by her guidance counselor, Marci Tiggs, to apply to the Eileen Fisher Institute last year. The Leading for Impact Program is for second-year participants ages 16-18.

On the elementary level, through a partnership with IBM, four students from William E. Cottle School have been awarded full scholarships to attend the Family Science Saturday Program at IBM headquarters for six Saturdays beginning in January 2014. The students will perform hands-on experiments on the following topics: Kitchen Chemistry, States of Matter, Polymer Science, Introduction to Electronics, Algorithms, Wave Theory. The program, developed by IBM scientists, allows the children to experience science in a fun and relevant way.

“Identifying, encouraging and, whenever possible, enabling these types of opportunities is a part of the district’s effort to fulfill the mission: A Promise to Prepare for Tomorrow,” stated Dr. Nuzzi, Superintendent of Schools.
