Legendary television news journalist is gifting her archives of tapes, photographs and papers to alma mater Sarah Lawrence College, the school announced at commencement ceremonies over the weekend.

Walters, who retired this year from her show The View, is one of the most recognized and celebrated television news personalities of the last 40 years, and her gift will lead to the creation of the Barbara Walters Archive at the Bronxville-based school.

“We are thrilled by this new gift from our extraordinary alumna so that her legacy can be shared with students, scholars, and beyond,” said Sarah Lawrence College President Karen Lawrence.

Walters appearance at the commencement - and the gift of her archives - was a surprise and nearly stole the event from commencement speaker, CNN international journalist Fareed Zakaria.

Sarah Lawrence is a Yonkers-based school, not Bronxville-based.

Thanks for your comment, Louise, and thanks for your interest in Patch. Yes, there is truth to what you said, but in this case I used Bronxville based on what the school lists on its website: http://www.slc.edu/directory/. Additionally, the school has posted items in the past on the Patch Events Calendar and listed Bronxville addresses. I meant no disrespect to Yonkers. Thanks again.
