Planking to Cause Saw Mill Pkwy Closures

Interim repairs to the Ashford Avenue Bridge, on the boarder of Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry, will cause some road closures on the Saw Mill River Parkway next week. Netting and planking, which will be installed on the underside of the bridge, is expected to start, weather permitting, on Monday, Oct. 22 until Sunday, Oct. 27.

This is how the road will be affected:

• All lanes of the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway, which runs underneath the bridge, between Ashford Avenue (Exit 17) and Lawrence Street (Exit 16), located in Dobbs Ferry, will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

• The southbound left lane of the parkway will be closed starting at 8 p.m. and then the full southbound direction lane closed beginning at 11 p.m.

• The northbound left lane of the parkway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. The southbound left lane will remain closed until 5:30 a.m.

Drivers will look to a flag person or officer at the traffic signal at Ashford Avenue and Northfield Street (southbound parkway exit 17) for direction. The detour route will use Ashford Avenue to Saw Mill River Parkway Road (Route 9A) to Lawrence Street to the southbound parkway.

The interim work, which carries a $1.5 million price tag is being done by McNamee Construction Corp. of Lincolndale, NY and will be complete this winter.

Though the bridge, which has been referred to as the “worst county-owned bridge in Westchester,” is slated for a $20 million long-term rehabilitation, the emergency repairs are being made in response to an incident on June 22 when concrete from the sides of the bridge fell onto the New York State Thruway, which runs underneath the bridge, damaging several cars. The long-term work, which is expected to end in 2017, is being financed with a combination of federal, state and county funds.
