Latimer and Cohen Debate the Issues in Eastchester

Hundreds of residents fill the auditorium at Eastchester High School Thursday evening for a student-run debate between Assemblyman George Latimer-(D) and Bob Cohen-(R).

With 10 days left until election day, Assemblyman George Latimer-(D) and Bob Cohen-(R) debated the issues that students from Eastchester High School felt were the most important to the community Thursday evening as both men are seeking the 37th Congressional State Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Suzi Oppenheimer.

The debate was being sponsored by the Eastchester High School Student Government Organization (EGO), students in the AP Government class, members of the Political Science Club, and the Eastchester PTA Council.

A student from each of the sponsoring student groups had a chance to submit a question to the candidates and EHS Principal Dr. Jeffrey Capuano was proud of the initiative he saw the students and teachers take in bringing the debate to EHS.

"This debate is a great service to the community and perhaps more importantly, the students are taking an active role in government and will remember this experience for years to come," stated Capuano.

Did you attend the debate last night? Who won in your opinion? I thought both candidates gave thoughtful responses and I think this race will be very tight come election day.

Josh, you are right; it will be tight---BUT IT SHOULDN'T BE. Bob Cohen is the ONLY candidate to consider if you are a taxpayer in this, the highest taxed county of all 3500 counties in the nation. Bob Cohen has crossed party lines and sided with Governor Cuomo, and has the backing of such moderates as Mayor Bloomberg. Latimer refused to vote on the tough issue of pension reform, because he knows that the only chance he has, is to get the union bosses on his side. Bob Cohen on the other hand, knows that we cannot continue on this unsustainable spending path which is driving taxpayers, businesses and our children out of this state. That's why I proudly display a 'Bob Cohen for Senate' lawn sign.

Joe, I like it when anyone is an active participant in Gov't and hopefully people will turn out in record numbers on election day. I have had the chance to meet both candidates many times and I think they are both qualified for the position and it's just a matter of who the voters feel will better serve in office. As you probably know, in the past, many politicians have run for office that were no where near qualified for the job.

I've met both candidates and I've watched several debates and the only person anyone should be voting for is Bob Cohen. Latimer's taking money from the teacher's union & that says a lot about how he'll vote in the future.

Yup ... Latimer's in the union tank.
