Yonkers Firefighter Injured During Training Dies at Age 49

Yonkers mourns loss of 12-year veteran firefighter; his organs donated to help others.

A funeral is scheduled for Saturday for Yonkers firefighter Antonio Rodrigues, who died Tuesday following medical struggles from injuries sustained during fire department training in May.

He was was hospitalized on July 18 and died late Tuesday at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla due to complicationes from a hemorrhagic stroke, according to Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. Rodriques, 49, a Yonkers resident, was a 12-year veteran of the city's fire department and was assigned to Ladder 74 on Radford Street in Yonkers.

He had been honored six times with departmental commendations during his career.

Rodriques donated his organs to several recipients through the New York Organ Donation Network. He is survived by his parents, Celeste and Celestino Rodriques, his brother, Lester C. Rodriques, his sister-in-law Anna Maria Rodriques, his niece, Nicole Rodriques, his nephews, Matthew and Alex Rodriques, and his girlfriend, Amy Krawczyk. 

“The City of Yonkers lost one of its bravest men with the untimely passing of Yonkers Firefighter Antonio Rodriques,” said Spano. “Antonio served with the Yonkers Fire Department, giving of himself to the residents of our City with unyielding passion, commitment and strength. We will forever remember Firefighter Rodriques, along with our other fallen uniformed officers, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family during this very difficult time.”

Calling hours are set at Flynn Funeral Home, 1652 Central Ave., Yonkers, on Friday, Aug. 3, from 2-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial is scheduled at Immaculate Conception/St. Mary’s Church at 103 South Broadway on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 114 Sprain Road in Yonkers.
