New York State Police are reminding drivers to be exercise due care when traveling this week, as the region is expected to see several inches of snow.
"Inclement weather, consisting of heavy snow, cold temperature and dangerous wind is expected to continue throughout the morning hours of January 3, 2014," officials said in a statement. "This storm will make all roadways slick and unpredictable. Allow adjustments to your schedule to ensure safe travel or simply avoid unnecessary travel. If you must drive, use extreme caution and drive slow."
Here are some tips state troopers shared:
- If you must travel, make sure your car is stocked with survival gear like blankets, a shovel, flashlight with batteries, extra warm clothing, quick energy foods, jumper cables, and tire chains if you have them.
- Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
- Keep your gas tank as full as possible in the event that you are stranded or stuck in traffic. Top off windshield washer fluid to ensure a clean windshield.
- Check your tires for quality tread and proper inflation.
- Keep your cell phone battery charged and keep it with you whenever traveling. If you should become stranded, you will be able to call for help, advising rescuers of your location.
- Lastly, make sure someone knows your travel plans and routes.
