Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Package on Saw Mill

Authorities temporarily close roadway to identify mystery bag's contents.

A portion of the Saw Mill Parkway in southern Westchester has been reopened Friday after the Westchester County bomb squad investigated a suspicious package.

A cloth bag with a zipper was spotted on the roadway in Yonkers shortly after noon, prompting a 15-minute closure in both directions. The parkway was shuttered from the Executive Boulevard exit in the northbound lane to the Farragut Avenue exit in the southbound lane, temporarily snarling traffic as a result.

"It was enough time for the bomb squad to check it out and deem it 'non-dangerous,'" said Thomas Gleason, an inspector with Westchester County Police.

Gleason said the bag contained clothing and personal items, but authorities remain unsure of who it belongs to, and how it got there.

"There was no identification," he said.
