Police Continue to Build Case Against Westchester County Handyman

Since the department’s arrest last month of 69-year-old handyman Robert Satenberg, Scarsdale police are continuing to build a case against the White Plains resident, after receiving “dozens” of calls from homeowners who reported missing jewelry after Satenberg allegedly worked in their houses.

According to Det. Lt. Thomas Altizio, Satenberg has worked in the Scarsdale area as a self-employed carpenter and handyman for more than 20 years and has numerous clients.

“We believe there are people still using him, which is concerning considering the charge against him,” said Altizio, adding that the department is working with several residents on the case.

Satenberg was arrested by police last month on a charge of third degree Grand Larceny, a Class D Felony, for allegedly stealing more than $30,000 worth of jewelry from several Scarsdale homes. His case is still pending.

Altizio said that Satenberg had allegedly used Toby’s Jewelry, located on South Central Park Avenue in Hartsdale, to pawn several pieces of jewelry, including items Satenberg allegedly stole from a Mamaroneck Road home that led to his arrest.

Satenberg resides on Alexander Avenue in White Plains, and according to the blog www.Scarsdale10583.com, he apologized for his alleged transgressions and blamed an uncontrollable illegal drug habit for allegedly prompting him to steal from the homes of clients.

Additional pieces of jewelry that police believe Satenberg also stole from other area homes have been turned over to police by Toby’s Jewelry, which has prompted the Scarsdale department to contact Westchester County Police to investigate the pawn shop.

The shop, according to Altizio, may have allegedly violated laws pertaining to pawn shops such as failing to obtain proper identification, failure to keep pawned items on-site for a minimum of 14 days and failure to keep up-to-date records.

Attempts Thursday to reach a Toby’s principal for comment were not successful.
