Devastating Weekend Fire Kills 2-Year-Old Westchester County Boy

Written by Krista Madsen

A devastating house fire this weekend in Elmsford has left a two-year-old boy from Barbados dead, several adults injured, and a community heartbroken.

The fire broke out Saturday night around 10 p.m. in a two-story home at 107 Sears Street, where a mother and her toddler were staying. According to Greenburgh police, the boy’s mother is being treated for third-degree burns and three other adults were injured.

Seventy-five firefighters from the region responded to battle the blaze. The origin of the fire is still under investigation.

A neighbor who lives right across the street wrote on her Facebook page that night that she saw the blaze and her neighbor running down the street with a phone in her hand. “I ran out to see if I could help and she said the baby was in the house,” Corley wrote. She later described the scene with “tons of firefighters, EMS, cops…all the neighbors out… fire hydrant popped with water spraying everywhere.”

Despite the huge response, the missing toddler was not found until the next morning, reportedly in the attic. The roof had collapsed as responders attempted to find the boy.

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner has put out a call on Patch for citizens willing to help the fire victims.

“I will be contacting the owners of the house and will offer to help them in the coming days, months and years.  In the past - we've helped other Greenburgh fire victims overcome some red tape issues when dealing with insurance companies and government entities,” he writes. “If you have the time to help the families who are suffering as a result of this fire, please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.  Please advise what kind of help you think you could offer.”
