The Secret to Silky Hair Is in Your Kitchen

White Plains resident and high-end stylist Julius Michael gives you the recipe for shiny spring hair

Finally spring is here, and it's time to liven those locks and condition your hair!

Have you noticed that your hair has been dry? Or looking dull?  This can be attributed to the weather change, over-washing your hair, or excessive use of heat styling tools.

To bring back that beautiful shine—the most important thing to do is to condition your hair, and preserve the balance of its natural oils. You don't have to spend a lot on a good conditioning treatment, or sit under a hair processor in the salon for 30 minutes.

All you really need to do is open your refrigerator or pantry and mix a few ingredients together, and you'll have a fabulous conditioning treatment!

  • Use two or three egg yolks, one tablespoon of mayonnaise, and one teaspoon of olive oil.
  • Beat them together, then take the mixture and massage it into washed towel-dried hair.
  • Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or put on a shower cap.

Good thing it's spring and not summer, because if you sit in the sun with this mixture you'll have an omelet on your head!

I recommend leaving the treatment in your hair for as long as you can—even overnight.  When you’re cooked—I mean ready—rinse your hair really, really well and condition.

You will immediately feel the silkiness and see the shine in your hair.

Another great do-it-yourself at-home remedy is the classic V05 hot oil treatment.  You can find it in CVS for about $2. Just place the plastic vial with oil in a cup of warm water, and let it heat up. Snip off the tip and massage the hot oil through your washed towel-dried hair. I recommend leaving it in for 45 minutes. Rinse well, condition and style.

Try these tips and bring back your sexy, shiny, fabulous springtime hair.

If you try my egg yolk hair treatment, let me know in the comments. I want to hear your feedback!

*A quick side note in reply to a comment on my last column asking what do I think about bangs.  Well, personally I'm not a fan of bangs. They can either date you—think 1980's—or not blend with your style. To pull off a good bang you need a great cut and a great color.

Think Jennifer Hudson—a big voice, a big face, a big bang. It works for her. Now think Sandra Bullock—a thin long face and heavy bang. Doesn't work. She looks scared and lost under her hair—and I usually love, love, love her hair.

Next week, I'm going to let you in on a major hair secret!!!!
