Chapel School First Graders Celebrate Penguins

Bronxville, NY- First grade students at The Chapel School, Bronxville, NY celebrated Penguin Awareness Day (January 20th) by completing a “Positively Penguin” unit. Students in Mrs. Rockhill and Mrs. Kolb’s class were excited to learn about the birds of Antarctica. “The weather was definitely to our advantage,” stated Mrs. Kolb.  As she pointed out the window to the snow covered trees and schoolyard. “The perfect penguin backdrop.”

“We chose to do a penguin unit because of the versatility,” said first grade teacher, Mrs. Rockhill.  Penguins were tied into Math, Science, and Reading lessons. “We created a tally and bar graph of the classes’ favorite flavor of goldfish snack.” Students read fiction and non-fiction books about penguins. They completed penguin shaped worksheets with facts that they learned. “The emperor penguin is the largest and can grow to 48 inches,” read one child. The students measured themselves against the emperor and fairy penguin. “Wow! He is bigger than me,” exclaimed one student. “He looks like he going to a fancy dinner party,” said another.

The first graders also participated in a read-a-long of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” The moral of this story aligned perfectly with the penguin unit and what the school is trying to instill in their students. “We strive to provide an education that possesses academic excellence, spiritual depth, and moral integrity that enables each child to develop in a safe and nurturing environment,” stated Mr. Dhyne, Principal of The Chapel School-Bronxville.  Students celebrated the end of their unit by wearing their best penguin attire while watching “Happy Feet.” Happy Feet is an animated movie that encourages the audience to express themselves and to respect their environment. During the showing, the first graders shared penguin shaped snacks, cuddled penguin stuffed animals, and took pride in all of the penguin information they had learned.
