Bronxville Sheds Light on Breast Cancer Awareness

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fountain at the traffic circle in front of Lawrence Hospital Center has been turned pink. The Village of Bronxville and Lawrence Hospital Center have lit the fountain pink to remind women to get mammograms, which allows for the early detection of cancer, and a more effective treatment. It is recommended that women get a mammogram screening every year starting at the age of 40, or sooner if they are at high risk for breast cancer.

“The idea is to catch breast cancer very early. That is why it’s important to have your mammogram every year and not wait,” said Lawrence Hospital Center Radiologist Lynn Chinitz, MD. “If you don’t come every year, you might miss the opportunity to find a cancer while it is still small.”

Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin says she hopes people take notice of the pink fountain, and remember to be proactive when it comes to their health.

“The Village is an enthusiastic partner with the hospital in supporting breast cancer awareness,” said Mayor Marvin. “I would bet everyone in our village has been touched in some way by this disease. And if the simple act of installing pink lights reminds even one woman to get their mammogram, then it is all worthwhile.”

People in the area continue to use Lawrence’s Women’s Imaging Center because it continues to be an excellent local option for high-quality breast screening. In the near future, Lawrence Hospital Center plans to relocate and renovate its Imaging Center to enhance services even further.

“The Women’s Imaging Center is a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. That means that Lawrence’s screening and diagnostic mammograms are all accredited by the American College of Radiology,” says Dr. Chinitz.
