Howard Bennett Herbert, Former Bronxville Resident

Howard Bennett Herbert, 76, of Alexandria, VA, died January 27, 2014, after a year-long courageous battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

He was born to the late H. Robert and Florence Herbert, Jan. 25, 1938, in Brooklyn, Ny. Howard was the first child and the oldest of three boys. Howard graduated from the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in 1955 and received a B.A. in Sociology from Dartmouth College in 1959, where he was president of Tau Epsilon Phi. Howard married Nancy Reiss, and later was married to Margaret Chambliss in 1972, and they lived together in Bronxville, Ny., for over 37 years before relocating to Alexandria, Va in 2010.

After graduating from Dartmouth, Howard severed his country in the New York State Army National Guard and then went to work for their family business, Towncliffe, Inc., a high-end women's clothing company previously located in the heart of the world-renowned garment center district on 512 Seventh Avenue New York, Ny. After the family sold Towncliffe, Howard went to work for Kirkland Hall and Augustus as a Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations. Howard was known on Seventh Avenue as the guru for managing production and manufacturing of women's luxury suits.

Dad loved to read anything and everything, but his favorites were crime and mystery novels. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, barbecuing, coaching little league baseball and soccer, bodysurfing waves at the beach, and watching all kinds of sports, especially Bronxville Broncos football, New York Jets and Mets. Dad also loved his dog Charlie – they went and did everything together.
Howard will be remembered as a selfless, hardworking, brave, moral, highly intelligent, strong, dependable and caring man, devoted husband, loving father and adoring grandfather – he was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be profoundly missed.
He is survived by his wife Margaret and four children: Brian Charles Herbert of Alexandria, Va; Deborah Herbert Lewis, of New York Ny; Helene Herbert Popowski, of Atlanta Ga; and Steven Herbert, of Short Hills Nj;. He also is survived by six grandchildren: Katherine and William Herbert, of Alexandria, Va.; Max and Nicole Lewis, of New York, Ny.; Gabriel and Emma Popowski, of Atlanta, Ga. Howard is survived by his two brothers: Richard Herbert, of East Hampton Ny; and Edward Herbert, of Boca Raton Fl.

"In death, one's life is marked by a dash on a stone which simply depicts all triumphs, achievements, and adversities one lived during their life. However, for those who loved Dad, that dash represents much, much more, it represents timeless and countless memories that will live on forever in our hearts way past the end year of his life." – Until we meet again, your loving and eternally grateful son.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (http://www.lls.org/).
