Gene Mitchell: Retired Bronxville Police Sergeant

Eugene Lee Mitchell, 60, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1995 and formerly of Mount Vernon, died on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in the Bronx on February 28, 1953, he was the son of the late Barbara Dunne. Gene was employed as a Sergeant with the Bronxville Police Department for more than 25 years until his retirement in 2008. 

Gene was a “Jack of All Trades.” Known to his friends as “Inspector Gadget”, he was a mechanic, carpenter and computer expert. He volunteered as a baseball coach from little league to high school and even college levels. He was also an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

On May 22, 1976 at Our Lady of Refuge in the Bronx, Gene married Dorothy Penker who survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Danielle, Christopher and Matthew Mitchell of Hopewell Junction; his brothers and their wives, Robert and Bina Dunne of the Bronx, Steven and Mindy Dunne of LaGrange; his sister and her husband, Linda and Arthur White of Lynchburg, VA; his brother-in-law and his wife, Donald and Elizabeth Penker of Hopewell Junction; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.
