Eastchester Cancer Fundraiser Today

In an effort to eradicate childhood cancer, between 50 and 60 men, women and children will have their heads shaved at Eastchester’s Mickey Spillane’s Pub on Saturday, April 20, 2013 as part of a fundraiser to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The event starts at 7:45 p.m. A dozen barbers have volunteered to shave the participants, who will have secured pledges in return for them having their heads shaved.

This is the fifth year Mickey Spillane’s will host the event, and proprietor Stephen Carty is enthusiastic about building upon the $154,000 that has already been raised over the first four years. Carty says that well over 100 people in the Spillane’s organization and in the surrounding community will be volunteering their time to help make this year’s event a success.

“I am blessed in so many ways, as so many of are,” said Carty, who has two children. “We’re fortunate to be able to come together to help do something that can help save children from this disease.” Carty’s wife Geraldine will have her head shaved at this year’s event.

Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.

St. Baldrick’s volunteers raised more than $30 million in 2012 by shaving heads and raising funds in bold new ways. St. Baldrick’s Foundation has raised $100 million for childhood cancer research grants since 2005.
