Some Bronxville residents may be surprised to find that their village name was once dubbed "Underhill's Crossing" named for one of the first families to settle in the Village during the 18th Century.

Just for fun, next time you find yourself walking around the village, ask someone for directions to Underhill's Crossing and either they'll have never heard of it or will hopefully get a good chuckle since in reality, your already standing in "Underhill's Crossing".

Back in the early 1700s, when the first British Colonists began settling in Westchester, two families, the Underhill's and the Morgan's set up camp in the region.

According to the Village of Bronxville's website, which gives an excellent description of the history of Bronxville, both families farmed and tended orchards, but the Underhills also established the first local factory – a saw and grist mill where today’s Pondfield Road West crosses the Bronx River.

Once the Village became incorporated in 1898, the name became permanently established as Bronxville, but hopefully residents of the village are aware of the former name of the Village and how it came to be.
