JCC to Host Community Chanukah Party, Israeli Folk Dancing Dec. 4

The event will include traditional Chanukah food, holiday music and the lighting of an outdoor candelabra.

From the Jewish Community Center of Mid-Westchester:

Scarsdale, NY – This year, the first day of Chanukah coincides with Thanksgiving Day -- the first such occurrence since President Abraham Lincoln established Thanksgiving in 1863, and the only time these two holidays will overlap until the year 79,811.  To mark this unprecedented event, the JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, will host a community-wide Chanukah celebration on the last night of the 8-day holiday, Wednesday, December 4, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The festivities will include the outdoor lighting of a giant hannukiah (candelabra), with traditional Chanukah food, holiday music and Israeli Folk dancing in the JCC Social Hall, led by JCC dance instructor Cantor Uri Aqua. All are welcome to attend, free of charge.

Avid folk dancers enjoy Israeli-style dancing with Cantor Aqua at the JCC everyTuesday. Beginners are encouraged to arrive Tuesdays at 7:45 p.m. for basic instruction, followed by circle and partner folk dancing for all from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. “Folk dancing is a fun form of exercise that helps us strengthen our connection with Israel through music and movement,” says Aqua. “This is also a great forum for meeting new friends with similar interests!”  No prior experience is necessary for this ongoing, learn-as-you-go class. Fee for the Tuesday night class is $11, or $57 for a booklet of six class coupons.

Cantor Aqua also leads Israeli Folk dance in Manhattan, which has long been the epicenter of Israeli dance, and at Westchester’s Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle where he serves as cantor.

The JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale, a proud beneficiary of UJA-Federation of New York, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the community by providing cultural, social, educational and recreational/fitness programs, human services and Jewish identity-building opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds without regard to race or religion. www.jccmw.org.
