Generoso Pope Foundation Buys Tuckahoe Police Gym Equipment

The Generoso Pope Foundation continues its support of Tuckahoe police officers' health and fitness with a purchase of new equipment to upgrade the department's gym.

The foundation first provided funding to the police department in 2005, for a complete make-over of the gym.

Having members who are physically fit helps to reduce injuries and illness, therefore cutting down on sick and injury leave, department officials said in a press release. "Law enforcement is a physically demanding and stressful occupation that has its members at a much higher risk of developing heart disease. Going from being completely inactive sitting behind the wheel of a patrol car to the vigorous activity of a foot pursuit or physical confrontation compounds strain on the heart."

The equipment was delivered and installed on March 26, as officers prepare for their upcoming annual physical fitness test. The police gym is available to members 24/7 so that officers can work out around their shift work.

The Generoso Pope Foundation has a long history of supporting public safety in Tuckahoe. The foundation has funded a license plate reader, Segway (personal transporter), thermal imaging equipment, digital fingerprinting system, training room, ballistic shields and a motorcycle unit.

"The donation of gym equipment is an investment in the health and well-being of each officer of the department," officials said.

The new items, an Arc machine and a Treadmill, are commercial grade quality, manufactured by CYBEX. The total cost of the equipment is $10,750, department officials said in a press release.
