Fritz and Shelia Stein Honored in Bronxville

The long time residents who have been married for almost 40 years will be honored as "couple of the year" at a gala on Sept. 23 at the Bronxville Women's Club.

Each year, the Bronxville Women's Club distinguishes one husband and wife as couple of the year in the Village and this year, the honor belongs to Fritz and Sheila Stein from Bronxville.

The big event gala will take place on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 pm. and tickets are $100 per person.

Chairs for the event are Joyce Balint and Vicki Ford as well as honorary chairmen who have served Bronxville in many capacities over the years.

They include current Mayor Mary Marvin and former Mayors Nancy Hand, Marcia Lee, and William Murphy, all having had large roles in the village government.

The event raises money for the ongoing improvements to the building of the Bronxville Women's Club, listed on The National Register of Historical Places.

Martin Stein “Fritz” was born in NYC, graduated from Manhasset High School on Long Island, received his BS degree from Columbia College, and his MD degree from Albany Medical College. In 1969 he accepted a position as Director of Medicine and Chief of Nephrology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers.  When he retired he was honored by the hospital for 35 years of dedicated service.

Dr. Stein is a Colonel in the US Army Reserves.  He retired in 1997 after completing 20 years.  Following his retirement he volunteered to go back on active duty at Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany during the Iraq war. He was deployed in 2005 and again in 2007.  There was a shortage of doctors at the time because of the number of wounded coming out of the war.

Fritz has also been active in Bronxville having served on the board of the Counseling Center for several years and chaired the Bronxville Challenge, a community based drug and alcohol education and prevention program.
