Bronxville Then and Now: Lawrence Park

Many of us pass the entrance to Lawrence Park, formally known as Valley Rd., each and everyday as we walk or drive along Pondfield Rd.

The archive photo was taken about 1910 and as you can see, the Village was even sleepier back then with less commercial buildings and what looks to be a dirt road that actually appears to have a grass median at the intersection.

Another interesting observation about the archive photo is that the stone archway that can be found along the sidewalks have traded places of prominence with the one on the east side of the street being clearly visible to passersby while the one on the west side is overgrown and barely visible.

The next time you find yourself in the area, perhaps take a trip up Valley Rd. into Lawrence Park and experience the maze-like streets that were carved out over a century ago in the neighborhood.
