Bronxville Resident Helps Raise Money to Fight Crohn's Disease

Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis affects 1 in 200 people in the United States.

The following release is from Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA):

Thirty-five Westchester and Fairfield County residents have raised over $125,000 to date to help find a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two debilitating intestinal diseases under the inflammatory bowel disease umbrella. The money was raised as part of the Team Challenge endurance training and fundraising program run by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).

“Team Challenge provides people with an opportunity to raise critical research dollars while training to do something that, for many people, they never imagined they’d be able to do- run 13.1 miles,” said Maddy Bell, endurance manager for the Fairfield/Westchester Chapter of CCFA. “It is inspiring to see a group of people come together, some who have these diseases and some who do not, united in the mission of finding a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.”

Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affects 1 in 200 people in the United States. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive track, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery.

The Westchester and Fairfield fundraisers began training in March and will participate in half-marathons on July 12 in Jamestown, Rhode Island and on July 20 in Napa.
