Viva Verdi /Giuseppe Verdi, Celebrating the Man, His Music and Times

A collaborative
presentation by Louis Barrella, Louis Leonini, professor of Italian language
& culture, and Dr. Snjezana Smodlaka, PhD in Italian literature, creates a
diverse and entertaining picture of our beloved composer, Giuseppe Verdi.

The program will
open by introductory remarks by Louis Barrella, Louis Leonini, and Snjezana
Smodlaka. Following the presentation will be the screening of the unedited DVD,
produced by the trio to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Giuseppe
Verdi’s birth on October 10, 1813. Verdi was an exceptional yet “common” man. Although
tremendously gifted with the musical and theatrical skills that propelled him
to celebrity status during his lifetime, he preferred to live the life of a
“country gentleman”. Verdi fully understood the human condition from
experiencing all levels of society and was able to truly reflect that in his
music, infusing it with the deep longings of the human soul. This presentation
will allow us to experience how he influenced the society and history of his
times. You will hear wonderful melodies and see scenes from his operas; and as
we celebrate his life with music, we will reflect on our own humanity! Question
and answer will follow the screening. A light reception will conclude the
evening.
