REI Outdoor School: Overnight Backpacking Trip
Camping in the winter, without the crowds, can be a
magical, quiet experience. The crisp, clean air, low humidity, and breathtaking
vistas make winter backpacking a must for any backcountry traveler. Learn about
what to bring, how to carry it, what and how to cook, how to manage water,
navigation and camp skills, how to stay warm and much more in an intensive,
cold-weather-focused, 2 day course. We will teach you the best ways to handle
the cold to thoroughly enjoy the beauty that winter backpacking has to offer.
Price includes all meals, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, stoves/cooksets,
park entry fees, and pre-trip information meeting. Because of the winter
weather, this course is more strenuous than a typical overnight backpacking
outing. We may encounter snow, ice, biting wind, or even cold rain. Part of this
course is learning how to be prepared for these situations so you can safely
enjoy the winter outdoors. Please do not hesitate to contact the Outdoor School
or your local co-op's camping sales specialists if you have any questions
regarding equipment.
Skills you'll learn:
Learn about clothing and equipment selection, pack loading, fitting, trail
selection, comfortable winter travel, navigation, campsite selection, camp set
up, cooking, and Leave No Trace etiquette.
