AUDITIONS: 33 VARIATIONS
Directed by Melinda O’Brien
Moises Kaufman’s 33 Variations is solid storytelling. And you don’t have to be a Beethoven fan to get into it !
What was Beethoven thinking – when he devoted four years of his diminishing life, even neglecting his Ninth Symphony and the Mass, to write 33 variations of a mediocre waltz? Fast forward 200 years to music scholar Katherine Brandt who is obsessively driven to solve that mystery, even at the risk of jeopardizing her own health and her relationship with her daughter. Katherine and Beethoven, it seems, have much in common; each passionately racing against time as Beethoven's descent into deafness parallels Brandt's own declining health. The result is an extraordinary new American play (Tony Nomination/ Best Play 2009) about passion, parenthood, and the moments of beauty that can transform a life. 4m, 3f.
