Steady Turnout As Bronxville/Eastchester Heads to the Polls

One of the electronic machines was temporarily taken offline Tuesday in at least one polling site in Bronxville.

Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe residents joined their fellow Westchester County neighbors in heading to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots on a host of propositions and candidates.

Turnout appeared to be steady but relatively light, according to moderators at the Bronxville Elementary School polling site. By 3 p.m., more than 250 people had voted at the location. Polls close at 9 p.m.

“It’s flowing,” said moderator Maria Liscio. “The turnout’s been very good, considering it’s not a presidential year.”

Bronxville’s local elections are not until March 18 of 2014, or the third Tuesday in March, so residents were voting primarily for county-wide candidates and statewide proposal questions. The Eastchester Town Supervisor’s position, currently held by incumbent Anthony Colavita, is up for election; Colavita, a Republican, is running against Democrat Michael Denning.

No specific issue enticed Bronxville resident Christie Wheel to come to the polls on Tuesday, just an opportunity to show her son, Michael, what voting is like.

“I feel that if you have the opportunity you should vote,” said Wheel. “No matter how big or small, it’s all about it being out civic duty.”

Throughout the day, the elementary school site ran smoothly, but at about 4 p.m. one of the machines malfunctioned and was temporarily taken offline. The site used a backup machine while an elections technician was called in to fix it.
