In Photos: Space Shuttle Enterprise Glides Over the Hudson

A scene that residents may never see again: the space shuttle Enterprise piggybacks a ride on a 747 over New York Harbor and up and down the Hudson River Friday morning

On what was a windy and rather brisk April morning, residents in New York City and on up the Hudson River through Ossining got the thrill of a lifetime as the Space Shuttle Enterprise hitched a ride atop a 747 for a flyover, passing by the world's most recognizable skyline and then past the cliffs of the Palisades before returning for a safe landing at JFK airport in Queens.

Built in 1976 as a prototype, the ship was never be used on a real space mission but instead played a vital roll in NASA's high altitude test flights and other testing modalities.

All I can say is that it was FREEZING on the Hudson River this morning but me and about 100 other people braved the cold winds to see this event. People even began clapping and chanting "U.S.A." too! Very nice moment.

Loved it. Lots of people at the Tarrytown riverfront. News crews, binoculars, people with big telephoto lenses, excited kids (and adults), people saying "Once in a lifetime." Over in a moment but well worth it.

obviously you have a better camera than I do! How did you get those shots?
Susan Beauchamp April 27, 2012 at 03:36 pm
I followed my Co worker's shout and ran out the door just in time to see it go by...thrilling!

Amazing photos!!
Walt April 27, 2012 at 04:13 pm
It was an amazing sight indeed. What a shame NASA's budget has been slashed to next to nothing and the Space Shuttle program has scraped by the obama administration.

Thanks to all for posting photos for those of us on the otherside of the county this morning. Looks cool.
Kathleen April 27, 2012 at 05:39 pm
Absolutely thrilling! I agree with you about the shame of it all --- one more anti-American thing that Obama has done. My son used to have dreams of being an astronaut and now I have to redirect him. Sad state of affairs....

I missed it by 5 minutes because the neighbors' babysitter's car was blocking mine. So angry! This reminds me of the Ray Bradbury story "All summer in a Day" where the little girl gets locked in the closet on the one day the sun comes out on her fictitious planet. (Okay, that's a little hyperbolic.)

I got my shots because I was in the F-16 Jet that was riding along side the 747. Just seeing the Jet was cool enough, let alone the Shuttle too.

Walt & Kathleen - The shuttle program was not "scrapped" by the Obama Administration. Plans to retire the shuttle have been in place for years, and were actually announced in 2004 by then-President George W. Bush. http://www.nasa.gov/missions/solarsystem/bush_vision.html

Shuttle Program was ended under Bush:
The shuttle program, which was scheduled for mandatory retirement in 2011, saw the final launch with Atlantis launching on July 8, 2011, in accord with the directives President George W. Bush issued on January 14, 2004 in his Vision for Space Exploration

Thanks for the fact-check, Jay.

I was stuck in traffic just two blocks from the Hudson River and was blocked by a couple of buildings as the shuttle went by TZ Bridge. Crews and the emergency wrecker trucks on the bridge say folks actually stopped their cars on the bridge to watch the shuttle ... they were kindly asked to move along...

What a great piece of history to witness. Now we can visit on the Intrepid in NYC. Can't waite!

I love space exploration and have loved it ever since I saw -- live on TV -- the Mercury takeoffs of Shepard, Grisson, Glenn, Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Wally Schirra, etc. And I don't want to minimize the scientific benefits that we gain from the space program. But with unemployment stubbornly hanging at 8%+ and millions of Americans underemployed, unemployed, giving up even on looking for work, and/or hungry, there are many other priorities I put ahead of the space program.
davideac April 27, 2012 at 07:28 pm
A few classes from Morse Elementary walked down Beekman and saw the shuttle. Very exciting.
Alison Bert April 27, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Lizzie, I relate, and I love your analogy. It's a real-life variation of my dream last night, where the shuttle coasted right above me, but I had forgotten how to use my camera. Hopefully all the wonderful pictures and videos people posted here will make you feel like you were here. And for what it's worth, Josh wasn't kidding about the wind. Some of us had our lenses splashed.

Hahaha Steve, thanks for schooling me on the military aircraft as I am horribly a novice when it comes to that kind of thing. I DO know the sound of a Jet engine when I hear one and today's flyby was really great and very much patriotic. I spoke with one gentleman who said it was so weird, remembering watching the Apollo missions on Tv as a boy and now photographing a spaceship, flying overhead on a 747...on his Phone! 50 years might as well be 500 years!

I was at LGA when the piggy-backing Enterpirse passed over head. I noticed that no flights were landing or taking off. Planes weren't even moving on the tarmac. Then the 747 appeared in the sky from the west-northwest. What an amazing sight. What a treat for us in the region.

Ditto that Jay!

Regardless................it was a very exciting event...Linda (Hudson Vally River!)

The shuttle as we know it was scheduled to end under Bush due to old age. The manned space program, which had been working on the shuttle replacement vehicle was killed by Obama to save 3 whole billion dollars. Hope the folks in Florida and Texas remember in November.
Yehbut April 28, 2012 at 12:23 pm
Yehbut, that's not the whole story. The shuttle as we know it was scheduled to end under Bush due to old age. The manned space program, which had been working on the shuttle replacement vehicle was killed by Obama to save 3 whole billion dollars. Hope the folks in Florida and Texas remember in November.
Richard April 28, 2012 at 12:36 pm
It'll be a Democratic landslide in November. There's plenty to remember.

The Chinese will go to the moon soon to stomp on our footprints and pee on our flag while they perfect EMT attack tech. Obama gives money to Brazil to drill for oil we cannot by and to Hamas to kill jews with. He is a very bad man, the darkest stain on the presidency in history. If he is not defeated it is the end of this country.

Thanks Jay for leaving that comment....People don't realize that Bush was in charge of this matter...Thanks again

LaMigra...Don't worry about what the Chinese are doing...Worry about N.Korea...And as far as any adminstration whether is democrats or republicans...Go independent...Your tea party is screwing up our country......Between the elephants and the jackasses they can't seem to agree...Do yourself a favor...Don't post...Start a drive and and go down to Washington DC and protest your feelings with a group of Americans who care about this country and are angry with the same things you're feeling about...Don't Post...ACT!!!..Posting is just a feeling not an action!!

I thought this was a very memorable event...What happened on 911, when we saw f-16's and other planes flying over head over the hudson..That was scarey...This wasn't..I'm sorry I missed it...Would have loved to take pics of this...But for the record, the people that took the videos..especially #3 and #6 will always be remembered.. Remember they did this on the East Coast, not the west...The only thing I hope is that NY taxpayers didn't have to pay for it...LOL!!

AGREED!! Breathtaking photos!
