Congressman Engel Hopes to Serve District 16 Well

With last night's victory over Republican challenger Joseph McGlaughin and Green party candidate Joseph Diaferia, Congressman Eliot Engel was elected to his 13th term as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for District 16, which encompasses sections of Westchester County and the Bronx.

Redistricting took place after the 2010 census and new areas of Scarsdale, Eastchester, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and Rye were added to an already large area of the Bronx, Yonkers and Mount Vernon that Engel is tasked with representing in Congress.

Despite the large area and even larger disparities in income among the residents who reside in District 16, Engel says that the diversity is something that he welcomes.

"People who I have represented in the past know that I work hard at what I do and what my positions are on various things such as education, property taxes and school aid," remarked Engel.

"Yes I represent a diverse district but if people feel like you care about their needs, and you are accesible, residents appreciate that and generally are confident in my ability to represent them in Washington," he continued.

Recently the Congressman could be seen all over Westchester, in Rye and Scarsdale, two areas hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and even though he won't begin representing those areas until Jan. 2013, Engel felt compelled to help those communities in need.

"I want people to know I care and that no matter what the circumstance, I will always be there to represent them in matters that concern the federal government and make sure they get whatever help is necessary to resume their daily activities," stated Engel.
