Sushi Thai, a New Asian Fusion Restaurant, Moves Into Space Formerly Occupied by Caravela

Tommy Zheng, owner of Okinawa in Ossining, has opened his second restaurant, Sushi Thai, at the Tarrytown location previously occupied by Caravela, a Portuguese restaurant.

Omakase will be Sushi Thai's equivalent of a signature sushi dish, said Zheng.

"The customer will have a say in the Omakase ingredients." he pointed out. "It will be an interaction of the conversation we have with the customer." Omakase will be priced from $40 to $80 per person, he said, depending on how it is customized.

Zheng's new Asian Fusion restaurant does not have hibachi grills like its Ossining older cousin and the menus for the two restaurants are not identical.

Not appearing on the Sushi Thai menu but getting a strong recommendation from Zheng is a sushi-bar special called bluefin toro ceviche ($15), cut from the belly of the tuna. Sushi specials change weekly; sometimes even sooner. The sushi chef is Henry Zheng (Tommy's cousin).

The following dishes, Tommy Zheng expects, will become the most popular ones out of the kitchen from kitchen chef David Jiang.

Appetizers

  1. Home-made pork dumpling. Balsamic vinegar sauce and Shitaki mushroom. Pan-fried, but steamed is also available on request ($8)
  2. Grilled boneless ribs. Roasted sweet potatoes and spicy tangere miso glaze ($12)
Entrees
  1. Roasted Chilean sea bass. With tempura asparagus and orange miso sauce ($23)
  2. Crispy hot beef. Shredded beef fried until crispy, served with bell peppers and onions in a sweet, spicy glaze ($16)
  3. Eggplant dumplings. Shrimp and scallops chopped together and stuffed into eggplant and topped with "Chef's" sauce ($21)
Desserts
  1. Cappuccino truffle (the most popular dessert at the Ossining restaurant). Combines cappuccino gelato with espresso; covered with coffee-flavored meringue sprinkles
  2. Mini key lime pie cheesecake. Cheesecake with key lime and lime marmalade
Beverages
  1. Lichee martini. Made with lichee nuts, lichee syrup and lichee liqueur ($10)
  2. Mango martini. Made with mango liqueur, Triple sec liqueur and fresh lime juice ($10)
The above dishes are served at both the Tarrytown and Ossining restaurants except for the grilled boneless ribs, the crispy hot beef and the eggplant dumplings; these three dishes are served at the Tarrytown location only.

Desserts are not prepared on the premises and are typically priced at $6 or $7.

Zheng grew up and attended culinary school in Fujian, a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Persuaded by a friend, he came to America 13 years ago, joined the friend in Pittsburgh, PA and was hired as a cook by an Asian Fusion restaurant. He stayed for eight years advancing to executive chef and then to general manager. Five years ago, he moved his family to Ossining and opened Okinawa.

Sushi Thai has 60 seats inside and 20 more in front on the sidewalk. Its long bar has four side-by-side large-screen television sets with only four stools but plenty of standing room. Takeout for items on the menu is offered  for customers within five miles. A minimum charge of $15 applies.
