Andrus in Tuckahoe Provides Art Classes

Andrus Early Learning Center has announced a partnership with ArtsWestchester that will provide unique art classes for the children at the  (AELC) in Tuckahoe.

Judith Leire, a ceramicist from ArtsWestchester, has volunteered her time to the AELC for three days a week with 30 minute classes for 3-year-old children and 45 minute classes with 4-year-old children.

This project was made possible by ArtsWestchester, with funding from the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Leire has created a schedule of various weekly ceramic art activities based on the level of creativity the children reach each week.

She brings several learning elements into the activities, including relating activities to books she reads with the children.

The children also learn to socialize and share with others when using paintbrushes and clay, and practice counting as they work on their projects.

“Art is my passion and to be able to share that with young children is a gift,” said Leire. “Each week, we see the children progressing and step by step, they’re learning how to create their own works of art.”

Throughout the weeks, the children also have the opportunity to observe the entire art process from start to finish. After the children finish their weekly project, Leire takes the pieces home, where she fires the clay artwork in her kiln.

At the end of the art program in December, the school will be holding an art show, where the children can showcase their projects to their families. Andrus is the only school in the area that offers exposure to these unique crafts and activities to children at such a young age.

“We’re lucky to receive a grant from ArtsWestchester for such a unique program,” said Vidia Cordero, AELC Director. “We strive to give the best to the children at the Andrus Early Learning Center, and we’re thrilled to add the ceramic program, which is both fun and educationally stimulating, to our schedule of various weekly activities.”
