The Eastchester Environmental Committee gave a "thumbs up" to Polpettina Homestyle Pizza Kitchen Thursday night, presenting the eatery with a Green Medallion Award during an appreciation dinner at Mickey Spillane's.
Opened in March 2011, Polpettina was honored for using recovered materials in its construction and operations – dark wood walls, tables and shelves are made from Westchester reclaimed wood from two barns.
Founders/chefs Kyle Inserra and Mike Abruzese spent time in kitchens across the country and met in the summer of 2010 at Southfork Kitchen in Bridgehampton, N.Y. They use organic ingredients sourced from local farmers and fishermen; the produce is 100% USDA organic; and the meats are hormone and antibiotic-free.
A recent expansion, Polpettina Market, offers more room to enjoy the fruits of Inserra’s and Abruzes’s weekend searches for the best local 100% USDA organic produce, hormone and antibiotic-free meats, and fish. The new addition also includes a Blue Bottle Organic Coffee Bar and homemade soups, sauces and pickles for sale.
Westchester Magazine named Polpettina one of the county’s Best Beer-Focused Restaurants in 2011.
