Tuckahoe 9/11 Hero Remembered

Tuckahoe firefighter Jeffrey Walz is being remembered on this September 11th. Walz died during the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. His remains were found back in 2002, but he couldn't be properly identified until this July.

The 37-year-old firefighter is the 1,637th person to be identified in the thousands of remains found after the 9/11 attacks. Walz left behind his wife and son. He was posthumously promoted to lieutenant.

"We're just very relieved, in some respects, to be finally bringing him home to where he grew up and to put him to rest there," his brother, Raymond Walz. "That's some peace."

The New York City Medical Examiner's Office says 1,116 people of the 2,753 who died on September 11 have not been identified.

"My family always felt at some point we would get a phone call," Walz's wife, Rani, told the New York Post. "I wasn't so sure. This has reopened old wounds."
